According to the Prop Masters Union (who sent out an email to their members on Friday), the prop gun that Alec Baldwin fired on the set of “Rust” allegedly contained a “live round”. Baldwin accidentally shot and killed cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins while on set of the upcoming Western movie on Thursday in a tragic accident that involved a prop gun.
A vigil took place in New Mexico to mourn Halyna Hutchins which industry professionals and actors attending the event to light candles for the 42-year-old.
According to court records, assistant director Dave Halls did not know that the prop gun contained live ammunition and indicated that it was unloaded by shouting “cold gun!”.
Director Joel Souza, who was standing behind Hutchins, was wounded in the incident.
According to the New York Times and Los Angeles Times, there were at least two accidental gun discharges on the set days before the incident.
A criminal investigation has been launched by the Sante Fe County Sheriff’s Office.
A statement read: “The sheriff’s office confirms that two individuals were shot on the set of ‘Rust’. Halyna Hutchins, 42, director of photography and Joel Souza, 48, director, were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 68, producer and actor.”
No “foul play” is suspected “at this time”, however, a criminal investigation is required to establish “exactly what happened”.
