Elzaine (Ella) McCarthy (24), a well known radio presenter at Radio Teemaneng, says she has always had an artistic side to her, but her biggest asset ended up being her voice.
Ella, who was born in Kimberley, believes that sometimes life puts you through certain phases, situations and challenges so that you can reach an end result of finding something that you always knew was missing.
“I started singing at a very young age and have always had an artistic side. After high school I realised that I wanted to push myself more and express the ambition I have that my father always motivates in me. It ended up being to a point of always trying something new that I’m scared of and I started this by singing in front of audiences and getting my artwork seen.”
Through her singing she was invited for an interview at Radio Teemaneng Stereo at 20 years old. Her voice and personality landed her the job of radio presenter.
Not only is she a radio presenter, she is also an emcee at events and a content producer for her show “The Avenue” which airs from 09:00-12:00 on weekdays.
“I have also been nominated as the ‘Best Female Radio Presenter’ for the 2018/2019 ‘National Community Radio Week’ as well as being Nominated as ‘Best News Reader’ for the 2020 Northern Cape Awards.
“Since I started In the media industry I realised that there aren’t many women in the business and even generally in society there isn’t enough to cater for women. Knowing how much strength and resilience it takes to be a woman, and even more so to be a woman in the media industry, I do my best to empower more women to go beyond their wildest dreams.”
Ella says her mother has always been her greatest female role model.
“Every bit of strength I draw from myself, I get from her always telling me to keep chasing every dream I have in life, no matter all the challenges. She has overcome so many challenges in her life and today she is a strong, proud woman and a wonderful mother. In fact, my father is also to thank for the woman I am today, being the respected, hardworking man and caring father that he is. So everything I am, I owe to my parents for always being my biggest supporters in life.”
“I want to encourage the youth to not give up and to always remind them that nothing and no one can take away from you what you invest in yourself.”
