Self-taught fashion designer and make-up artist Denzil Pillay says he’s always been a “fashionista”, but never really thought of perusing his dreams until he started in 2017.

“I started off doing fashion runway shows to showcase my work as it helped me gain more knowledge within the fashion industry. I then made it my goal to do some research on the making of garments. I took a few sewing classes and it took me a year to perfectly know what to do.”

Denzil, who has his own brand, says he caters for all body types. “Growing up I had insecurities about myself, so in a nutshell I’d say Denzil Pillay Designs support body positivity.”

He started his kiddies line in 2021 and so far it has been a huge success. His new kiddies range will be launched in September 2021.

He says the favourite project he has ever worked on, was in 2017. “I showcased my first clothing collection which was held at the Kenilworth Race Course in Cape Town. For me it was a very proud moment to see what I can achieve with hard work and dedication.” The event was aimed as a giveback charity program to raise funds for the homeless.

Denzil’s plans for the future include expanding his business and make it a known brand. “I am excited to announce that by the end of August my online store will be up and running.”

To other young designers, his advice is to have faith in your abilities. “I firmly believe that you don’t have to be rich to achieve a goal.”
