According to several reports, a video captured by Al Jazeera show Taliban fighters holding guns and reciting from the Quran (the holy book of Islam) after taking control of the presidential palace.
The Taliban stormed Kabul early on Sunday as the Afghan government collapsed, after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled the country, setting the militant group up to retake the country 20 years after US-led forces drove them from power.
A source in Kabul said that the Taliban was reciting Quran verses that in part translate to: “When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest. And you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in crowds. Then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance.”
The Taliban announced on Sunday that they would be declaring the country the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, which would solidify their takeover of the US-backed Afghan government.
The militant group has said that they want a peaceful transfer of power, however the US embassy suspended its operations in Kabul and warned Americans of a quickly changing security situation.
A Taliban spokesperson declared the end of the war on a broadcast on Al Jazeera, adding that the type of rule the Taliban will pursue, as well as the set up of the new regime, will soon be made clear. “We assure everyone that we will provide safety for citizens and diplomatic missions. We are ready to have a dialogue with all Afghan figures and will guarantee them the necessary protection,” Taliban political office spokesman Mohammad Naeem told Al Jazeera.
Suhail Shaheen, another spokesman for the Taliban, said that the Taliban would hold talks in the coming days toward forming an “open inclusive Islamic government in Afghanistan.”
According to the CNN, President Joe Biden’s administration is reportedly limiting its current number of flights for Afghans to the US as a chaotic evacuation continues from Kabul airport, with the administration stating that their focus is on evacuating American personnel.
Germany, France and Turkey are mobilizing planes to help with the evacuation process.
