In the Afghan province, Ghor, the Taliban is taking over. Capturing vast portions of the country while the deadline looms for the withdrawal of the US-troops.
There are about 400 districts in Afghanistan and the Taliban are said to have control over at least 100 of these districts.
During June there were several significant battles between Afghan forces and the Taliban, including those in Ghor, where many soldiers were killed.
Now, in a history making development, the women in Ghor have decided to take up arms to defend their motherland against the Taliban forces.
Before the Taliban took over, Afghanistan was moving in a direction where women had more power and where there was equality and democracy.
After the Taliban took over, women were no longer allowed to leave their homes alone, they weren’t allowed to work or learn or get proper medical care. They couldn’t wear what they want and dowries were put on women. They were abused and mistreated and many had to flee from their circumstances.
The women in Ghor were quoted as saying, “This is our message to our security forces who are defending their nation that their sisters stand by them.”
“We have experience from the dark era of Taliban and once again we will not allow women to stay at their homes and not be able to go out of their homes,” a woman holding an AK-47 was quoted as saying.
It is as of yet unknown how many women have taken up the fight against the Taliban but according to local reports they are willing to work with the police and other security personnel in their fight against these forces.
