A sealed copy of the vintage Super Mario 64 game was sold at an auction for more than $1.5m, an amount that shattered several records.
The 1996 game cartridge was a launch title for the Nintendo 64 console, as well as being one of the most influential; early 3D platform games.
According to the auction house there are “fewer than five” copies in such good condition.
The Super Mario sale overshadowed another record-breaker, an original Legend of Zelda cartridge was sold two days earlier for $870 000.
The games weren’t purchased because they offered a rare gaming experience, Nintendo had rereleased both for its Nintendo Switch console, they were bought because of their value as physical memorabilia.
