Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics made a statement on Thursday that all spectators will be banned from attending the games after Tokyo declared a Covid-19 state of emergency.
Tokyo 2020 President, Seiko Hashimoto, said that, “It is regrettable that we are delivering the Games in a very limited format, facing the spread of coronavirus infections.”
According to reports the Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga, acknowledged the challenge the country faced as the more contagious Delta Variant has begun to spread in the country, he also warned about the danger of the virus spreading beyond Tokyo as people travelled home for the summer holidays.
However, at the same time, Suga pledged to deliver an Olympic Games that would go down in history as an example of fortitude in the face of adversity.
Tokyo declared a state of emergency on Thursday after they reported 920 new coronavirus infections, which is the highest number they’ve have had since May.
The state of emergency will begin on Monday and will be in effect during the Tokyo Olympics.
