The search-and-rescue mission at the collapsed Champlain Towers building has become a recovery effort.
This decision comes about two weeks after the 12-storey Champlain Towers collapsed in the night. According to the authorities, fifty-four victims have been found and 86 are still missing.
No survivors have been found since the initial collapse and according to the rescue crews most of the victims were found in their beds.
During a private meeting on Wednesday between families of the missing and Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief, Raide Jadallah, the announcement was made that the rescue mission would be ending. He reportedly told the families that there was “zero chance” that anyone who was in the building would still be alive underneath the debris three weeks later.
A grand jury investigation has been launched to try and determine the reason for the collapse on 24 June.
