NHL player, Matiss Kivlenieks, dies after ‘fireworks malfunction’

Matiss Kivlenieks, Colombus Blue Jackets goaltender, passed away after a “fireworks malfunction” during a Fourth of July party.

The 24-year-old Latvian native was reportedly in a hot tub with friends when a fireworks malfunction sent a mortar into the crowd.

The autopsy report said that Matiss Kivlenieks died due to chest trauma after the mortar hit him in the chest.

The death of Matiss Kivlenieks was ruled an accident.

Kivlenieks had played as the goalie for the Columbus Blue Jackets for the last two seasons and had competed for the Latvian national team.
