People who have the fast-spreading Delta variant of Covid-19, which is the driving force behind SA’s third wave of infections, may mistake it for a general cold.

Prof. Mary-Ann Davies, director of the University of Cape Town Centre for Infectious Disease, Epidemiology and Research, issued this warning on Thursday.

She said the symptom profile of the Delta variant is different from previous variants, while speaking at the weekly Western Cape government Covid-19 briefing.

The symptoms are often milder and a “simple runny nose” could mean you have Covid-19 and need to self-isolate.

Davies added more work should be done to understand why this variant differs.
