This is the moment a parked SUV is completely swallowed by a sinkhole that appeared in a car park that was built on top of a 100-year-old well.
The incident took place at a residential complex in the suburb of Ghatkopar in the Indian city of Mumbai on 13th June. The resident welfare association later said that an old well was covered to incorporate into the car park and that it was washed away by a huge downpour in the city.
The footage shows the car slowly sinking into the crumbling hole head-first until is completely disappears. Meanwhile, two other nearby parked cars are untouched as the covered well only appears to have affected the immediate area above it.
The car’s owner Dr. Kiran Doshi said: “We have another car in the compound and the man who cleans it alerted us. We came out onto the passageway and the car disappeared into the well before our eyes.”
He added that the well is around 30 feet deep and over 100 years old. Dr Doshi said: “We are using submersible pumps to suck out the water and a crane is here to get the car out.”
The incident took place as Mumbai and other coastal regions in the state of Maharashtra suffer heavy monsoon rains.
The India Meteorological Department said the bad weather will continue for the coming days, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation issued a high alert while the Coast Guard, Navy, and the National Disaster Response Force have been put on standby.
