KIMBERLEY. – Residents in Kimberley have started a petition to stop a Cape Town company, Frogfoot, from installing wooden tar poles on pavements in Kimberley for fibre.
The Sol Plaatje municipality has granted this company the right to lay the cables underground, but now poles are erected in some areas in Kimberley – contrary to the permission granted originally.
These poles are now also planted in front of houses in the heritage areas of Klisserville, Beaconsfield and Belgravia – with areas such as New Park to follow. The poles have already been erected in Cassandra.
Ockie Fourie, DA councillor, says the petition has been started by ward 25 in the municipal area but other wards are welcome to join.
“We must take a stand against this! The poles are doing an injustice to Kimberley’s heritage and historical areas and is also a security risk. Many houses have lanes behind the houses where these poles could be planted – should it not work in a trench.”
