Enoch Godongwana, minister of finance, published in the state gazette on 31 March the release of Eskom HOLDINGS SOC Ltd for the disclosure of any irregularities and fruitless, as well as wasteful expenditure, appearing in the annual report during the financial year.

Ms. Cleopatra Mosana, spokesperson for national treasury, confirmed the legitimacy of the gazette to FiND iT. "This is an exemption (and) was at the request of Eskom."

This is in terms of section 92 of the Public Financial Management Act, 1999 (Act no. 1 of 1999).

The period of exemption includes the 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25 financial years.

South Africans took to Twitter to protest the release, while others thought it was an early April Fools' joke.

Kleva Black tweeted: "This can't be constitutional.. removes all accountability.. by the time they are done another R500 billion will be gone & we'll still be stuck with loadshedding."

NW Morrow says: "Shrouds corruption and mismanagement under a cloak of secrecy….. so unfair on all of us."

Candice Tanner asked if it was an April Fool's joke.
