One person was killed in a mob attack overnight in Diepsloot North of Johannesburg hours after minister Beki Cele’s visit. The details surrounding the killing are still not clear, but the police have confirmed that one person was killed and more than 20 people were arrested on Wednesday evening.
It is alleged that a small group of people went to the deceased house and asked where he was hiding his gun. The man who tried to escape was hit with stones and set alight by the angry mob. When the police arrived at the scene it was too late, and the man was declared dead on the scene.

Kutlwano Moalosi, Diepsloot’s community policing forum secretary, said the nationality of the victim who was killed in the mob attack is not confirmed yet and investigations are still underway. SABC News identified the victim as Elvis Nyathi, quoting from his wife Nomsa Tshuma who shared details of how her house was searched as it was believed that there was a gun inside.
Tshuma said she tried to hide with her husband, but the angry mob found them and asked for their passports. She was able to provide hers, but her husband could not and that is when the attack happened. “They asked why are we hiding, it means we have a gun. That’s why they took him. I told them there was no gun and told them to search.”
