Newly elected Mpumalanga treasurer-general Mandla Msibi has agreed to step down after the ANC reminded him of the step-aside rules. Msibi faces murder and attempted murder charges and cannot serve in any ANC position until he is cleared of wrongdoing by a court of law.
Msibi was nominated and elected as the new Mpumalanga treasurer-general at the province’s elective conference over the weekend. The election of Msibi raised eyebrows even among the ANC’s leadership as he had been suspended and was not at the conference when he was elected. A letter from Paul Mashatile, the party’s treasurer-general, followed requesting that Msibi steps aside.

In a letter, Mashatile asked Msibi to vacate his new seat. “We note your election as provincial treasurer at the provincial conference of the ANC Mpumalanga held between 1 and 3 April 2022. We further note that you have been charged with murder and that you have previously stepped aside as a member of the provincial executive committee.
“We remind you that the national elective committee at its meeting on 26 to 29 March 2021 reaffirmed the resolution of the 54th National Conference that all members who have been charged with corruption or other serious crimes must step aside, failing which they should be suspended,” Mashatile said.
“Kindly confirm that your decision to step aside voluntarily on the terms and conditions outlined above remains in force,” he further said. President Cyril Ramaphosa had expressed concern at the conference following the election of Msibi and asked the party members to reflect on the decision they had taken.
