Mass shooting in Khayelitsha claims six more lives

Western Cape police have confirmed that six people have been shot and killed in the Enkanini informal settlement in Khayelitsha on Sunday afternoon. On Monday morning crime scene experts were still trying to gather evidence from the crime scene where six people were killed.

Novela Potelwa, the police spokesperson, said, “Reports from the scene indicate that three unknown gunmen fired shots randomly at the victims in Lindela Road in the Enkanini informal settlement at approximately 16:10.”

Five people died on the scene with the sixth victim passing away in hospital. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage. This is the second mass shooting in the past few days. There was another shooting in Monwabisi Park informal settlement in Endlovini. Five people were shot and killed. The motive for the shooting was also unknown.

According to Potwela the victims in Sunday’s incident comprise of two women and four men estimated to be between the ages of 22 and 27. Police have opened a murder case and the organised crime unit will be investigating the matter.

The police have called on anyone who has any valuable information that can assist in apprehending the suspects who were involved in the killing of the six victims to contact the police on 08600 10111.
