A man from Clocolan has been sentenced by the Free State High Court to six life terms for raping his daughter six times. The 14-year-old girl was living with her father who is the accused, his wife who is her stepmother, and who siblings.

Judge Pina Mathebula sentenced the accused father, who cannot for his safety be identified to six life terms for raping his child six times between May and July 2021. Phaladi Shuping, the National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson, said in May 2021 the accused told his wife that he had a dream and in that dream his brother told him that his daughter (the victim) had a tokoloshe and “he had to get rid of the tokoloshe that was inside the victim.”

On the very same night when the man had told his wife about the dream, he raped his daughter repeatedly. The last time he raped his daughter was on 25 July 2021. The cries from the child did not deter the man from moving ahead. His wife tried to stop him, but he assaulted her.

The rapist’s wife visited the family the day after the last incident. The suspect threatened to kill his wife and his daughter if they told anyone about what had happened. The suspect’s sister reported it to the police, and he was arrested. The accused is now sentenced to six life terms.
