Anna Sorokin, the social scammer on whom the Netflix drama Inventing Anna is based, was released today from a detention centre in New York.
Julia Garner plays the role of Anna in the Netflix hit. Viewers were torn in two over whether Anna was a brave entrepreneur or swindler.
According to the New York Post, she will board a flight to Frankfurt on Monday night, to be deported to Germany.
She spent almost a year in the Orange County Correctional Facility of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (IAC) because her visa expired.
Sorokin, 31, apparently does not want to be deported and wants to appeal against the decision.
Vaccination requests ignored
Last month, Sorokin – whose life and crimes were glorified in the Netflix hit Inventing Anna – and three other IAC detainees sued federal immigration authorities after receiving Covid-19 while in custody.
Sorokin tested positive for the virus on January 19, weeks after she submitted a written request for a follow-up dose of the vaccine, according to a complaint filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in federal court.
The plaintiffs allege that IAC violated their constitutional rights as medically vulnerable people by ignoring their requests.
Inventing Anna: apparently wanted to start art club
Sorokin came to New York City in 2013 to set up a members-only art club, according to her former defense attorney Todd Spodek, but things got out of hand.
She claimed to be an heiress named Anna Delvey and defrauded New York’s elite, hotels and banks out of about $ 275,000 in 2016 and 2017 while weaving stories of her wealthy background and interest in business and the arts.
One of her “friends” had her arrested
On October 3, 2017, Anna was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department in a raid planned by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
Rachel DeLoache Williams, who claimed to have been defrauded out of more than $60,000 by Anna during a trip to Marrakesh, was involved in the raid. The Netflix series, Inventing Anna, also depicts this.
Anna was transferred to Rikers Island, where she was detained without bail. Three weeks later, she was charged with theft of approximately $ 275,000 by various scams.
Spends four years in prison
She was convicted of eight charges against her, including second-degree theft, theft of services and first-degree attempted theft. She was acquitted on two charges: one of attempted theft in the first degree, and one of theft in the second degree (related to the alleged theft of $ 62,000 from Rachel Williams in Marrakesh).
