Students from Emzamweni High School in Pietermaritzburg embarked on a protest calling for teachers who are accused of sexual harassment to be sacked. The protest took place on Thursday morning forcing the school management to suspend classes for the day.
In a statement the Chairperson of the school governing body, Dumisani Mbanjwa said, the school decided to let the learners go home until the situation could be controlled. During the protest some of the learners were screaming and shouting.
Grade 12 learners remained behind and attended their classes as usual even though there were claims of sexual harassment within the school. Mbanjwa told the press that a meeting with the Representative Council of Learners (RCL) and the student representatives were given an instruction to get information on what the issues were.
While waiting for feedback from the representative’s students from different classrooms began crying and screaming. Learners received letters and were released to go home. The KZN Department of Education has not commented on the matter yet.
