Position: Investment Accountant

Location: Kimberley – Du Toitspan Road

Grade: C-Band

Term: Permanent

Background:

The De Beers Pension Fund (the Fund) is a self-administered restricted pension fund, for the employees and pensioners of De Beers South Africa. The organisation is seeking to employ an experienced, self-disciplined and highly motivated Investment Accountant with strong analytical and problem solving skills as part of a broader professional team.

Key Performance Areas:

The position reports to the Fund Financial Accountant and will be supported by other departments and multiple external service providers. The incumbent will be responsible for, amongst others, the following:

  • Providing technical financial advice;
  • Executing the various operational investment activities of the Fund in accordance with agreed financial and operating standards;
  • Monitoring and reconciling the Fund’s daily cash-flow (investments, disinvestments and switches) instructions and related transfers of funds from and to the Fund’s various bank accounts / investment portfolios to ensure correct and timeous processing by the Fund unitiser, investment managers and finance department;  
  • Obtaining and analysing monthly investment portfolio reports from the various investment managers, including scrip holding reports from the custodian, to identify investment transactions, fees and other adjustments (accounting transactions) for the month and preparing the required journal entries for processing;
  • Preparing of monthly investment portfolio reconciliations to the general ledger control accounts and scrip holding reports;
  • Preparing investment reports required for monthly management reports, quarterly and annual financial statements and year-end audit file, as well as the prescribed quarterly and annual submissions to the Financial Services Conduct Authority (FSCA) and South African Reserve Bank (SARB);
  • Maintaining productive relationships with other departments and service providers;
  • Implementing and maintaining adequate and effective financial systems, records, controls and procedures to ensure efficient investments and daily cash-flow management, the integrity and reliability of financial information and the adequate safeguarding of assets and data;
  • Monitoring legislative and other regulatory compliance;
  • Reviewing of investment management agreements and mandates, including monitoring compliance thereof;
  • Assisting with the development, implementation and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), as well as industry best practices, risk management principles and corporate governance structures; and
  • Assisting management with ad-hoc projects.

  • Sound knowledge, understanding and ability to practically apply accounting principles, accounting systems, corporate governance principles

  • Deadline driven, delivery focussed and stress tolerant
  • Good verbal and written communication, report writing and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with colleagues, service providers and other professionals

Minimum Requirements:

  • Recognised tertiary qualification in accounting
  • Completed articles and accounting at Honours or similar level will be advantageous
  • CA (SA) or similar professional qualification will be advantageous
  • 4 to 5 years’ proven  experience in a financial environment with financial reporting responsibilities
  • Prior experience in the retirement fund or similar industry, including relevant legislation and regulation
  • Proficiency in MS Office (including MS Word, Access and Excel)
  • Prior experience of the Com_Pen pension fund administration system will be advantageous
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of financial instruments and daily unitisation process
