Judge Mandisa Maya urged to ‘decline’ Chief Justice post

Judge Mandisa Maya, the President of the Supreme Court of Appeal has been recommended to become South Africa’s next Chief Justice by the JSC.

This caused a mixed reaction as some welcomed the news and are calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to make it so while other feel Judge Maya should decline the post given how the process unfolded.

Judge Maya was interviewed for the post along with three other candidates, while she was being quizzed for the Chief Justice post she was asked if she thought South Africa was ready for a woman to be the Chief Justice. They also focused on the fact that she is the first woman to lead the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Some South Africans feel Judge Maya should decline the post if she is picked because they think she if favoured by Julius Malema and Advocate Dali Mpofu.
