The SAPS has praised its quick-thinking officers and the vigilant members of the public in Goodwood, Cape Town, after they helped defuse a robbery-turned-hostage situation.
Two men reportedly stormed into a local supermarket and help up the store during a robbery but their plan for a quick escape was ruined after a customer managed to raise the alarm.
One of the robbers attempted to run down the road but members of the public managed to catch him and the police arrived soon after.
The SAPS arrived on the scene to restrain the second suspects, who was still inside the store. He attempted to take a hostage but that plan failed and the officers were able to arrest him.
In a statement issued by the SAPS, they confirmed the success of their tactical operation and dismissed rumours of a missing third suspect.
“The vigilance of the public and the swift response by police led to the arrest of two suspects on a charge of business robbery in Goodwood this morning. Two male suspects aged 35 and 29 are expected in court soon. At around 8:20 the armed suspects held the owners of a shop situated in Voortrekker Road hostage. One of the suspects fled when they were disturbed by someone who made alarm, but was apprehended by the public. SAPS members attached to Goodwood police arrived on the scene and arrested a second suspect. There was however reason to believe that a third suspect was still trapped in the shop and the Special Task Force was summoned to the scene. After the building was tactically penetrated, it was established that the two suspects were alone.”
