A man (28) was arrested at the Bram Fischer airport yesterday after he allegedly wanted to smuggle a hand grenade in his luggage on a flight.
Police spokesperson, lt. col. Thabo Covane, said the suspect arrived at the airport and reported to the check-in counter where he handed over his luggage to be searched. During the process of scanning his luggage, the grenade was discovered.
Bomb squad called for hand grenade
The police bomb disposal unit was called to the scene to handle the evidence and secure the building. The building was evacuated as a precautionary measure.
The building was declared safe and operations continued normally. The suspect was arrested and detained. He will appear in court soon.
