Thousands of sand and surf-lovers descended on Durban beaches this festive season, despite KwaZulu-Natal becoming the country’s new Covid-19 epicentre, overtaking Gauteng province with a daily rise in Covid-19 infections.
The KwaZulu-Natal province has surpassed Gauteng as the country’s hotspot, recording over 4,000 cases in the past 24 hours.
The eThekwini municipality said it has a contingency of plans to target high risk areas.
Spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said of eThekwini’s plans, “We’ve got hundreds of thousands of people who have descended to eThekwini for this festive season, but our message is still quite clear that we are still in the grip of the coronavirus and it’s therefore of cardinal importance that anyone that come to eThekwini respects protocols that govern our behaviour when it comes to Covid-19.”
Meanwhile, pictures have been circulating on social media, of hordes of people having fun in the sea waves without social distancing at Durban beach. This sparked outrage and shock on social media platforms.
Many question the lack of social distancing at beaches and the threat it poses to SA’s battle against the Omicron variant.
