Max Verstappen won the most exciting Formula One World Championship ever in the most dramatic way imaginable. He is the Formula One world champion after a nail-biting race in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
The Dutchman, sponsored by Red Bull, overtook his championship rival, Lewis Hamilton, on the final lap of the last race of the season. It is described as one of the close call races in decades.
Max Verstappen passes Lewis Hamilton
However, Verstappen’s victory is already the subject of much debate due to the circumstances in which he achieved the victory. After 54 laps of the 58-lap race, Hamilton was about 10 seconds away from his rival and it looked likely he would achieve his record-breaking eighth title. Verstappen, however, overtook Hamilton for Hamilton in the final round.
Mercedes, meanwhile, has filed two formal appeals against the race result. Racing authorities heard the appeals on Sunday night, but Verstappen is currently still the world champion.
