Storms unleashed devastating tornadoes on Friday and early Saturday across parts of central and southern US including Kentucky, where the governor says the death toll may exceed 70 after “one of the toughest nights in Kentucky history.”
Among the most significant damages are tornadoes collapsing an occupied candle factory in Kentucky, an Amazon warehouse in western Illinois, and a nursing home in Arkansas, killing people in each community and leaving responders scrambling to rescue others.
The most devastated sites is the southwestern Kentucky city of Mayfield, where a tornado damaged a candle factory Friday night while people were working, Kentucky Governor, Andy Beshear, said.
He said 40 of the 110 workers had been rescued from the factory so far.
More than 30 tornadoes have been reported in at least six states, which include Missouri, Tennessee and Mississippi.
Fire and police stations in Mayfield were destroyed, leading to emergency services hindered.
The extent of destruction will not be known fully, however emerging video clips which show flattened buildings, overturned vehicles and workers scouring rubble for trapped people, in what is described as unspeakable damage in some areas.
In a message on Twitter, President Joe Biden called losing a loved one in storms like this an “unimaginable tragedy.”
