Is a liquor ban in the cards for South Africa? With Christmas and New Year around the corner and the prediction of a fourth Covid-19 wave, South African liquor retailers are appealing to the government not to reintroduce a liquor ban.
The sector told EWN on Tuesday that as they moved to the peak trading period, they were faced with the possibility of a fourth wave, which would undoubtedly disrupt their business operations.
Lucky Ntimane of the National Liquor Trader said: “We call on the government to be careful about responding to the fourth wave by paying attention to science and all available justifiable means to ensure that we go through the fourth wave goes without sacrificing its livelihood, which was often the case with dealing with the previous three waves. ”
He said they had always maintained that lives could not be saved at the expense of livelihoods.
“There is real fear among liquor dealers that the ban on alcohol is threatening. But we remain convinced that our economy can no longer afford, let alone further, restrictions on alcohol sales. ”
