The court case of the “body in the fridge” suspect was pushed back by another eight days after he attempted to commit suicide for the second time since he was taken into police custody.
Flavio Hlabangwane has been moved to the hospital wing of Johannesburg Prison where he will remain under observation.
A lawyer representing “the body in the fridge” suspect is now pushing for a psychiatric evaluation for his client before court resumes on Tuesday, 30 November. Hlabangwane is facing a life sentence.
Hlabangwane was arrested earlier this month after body parts were discovered in his Soweto home by his girlfriend, who reportedly discovered legs and arms in his fridge.
It was recently revealed that his victim, Tshepang Pitse, was not only his former girlfriend but also his cousin. Speaking to SAFM, Pitse’s cousing said that Hlabanggwane and Pitse were in an incestuous relationship for five years. While Pitse’s head, arms and legs have been found, police are still searching for her torso.
Hlabangwane’s attorney told the Protea magistrate’s court he had attempted suicide on Monday morning and asked for him to be placed under observation at Johannesburg Prison. Up to now he has been in custody at Moroka police station.
Angry Soweto residents said they want him to be released on bail so they can “deal with him”.
After the gruesome discovery, Hlabangwane stabbed himself in an alleged suicide attempt and was admitted to hospital.
