On Saturday (9 October), two men (25 and 51 respectively) were arrested when a Covid-19 anti-vax and anti-mask demonstration became violent.

The suspects face charges of contravening the Disaster Management Act as they failed to wear masks in public.

The two men were among a group of demonstrators who yet again took to Sea Point on Saturday in another anti-vax protest.

The protest became violent when the two men reportedly refused to wear their masks after numerous requests by officers.

The police’s Frederick van Wyk explained what happened during the latest incident: “Both were released on a warning to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates court on the 17th of November on the mentioned charges.”

An infographic released last month showed that the vast majority of Covid-19 patients who were admitted to hospitals were unvaccinated.
