According to the New Zealand police, two men were arrested after attempting to drive into locked-down Auckland with a “car boot full” of KFC takeaway and over $100 000 (more than R1 million) in cash.
The police made a statement on Monday that, “The vehicle was searched and police located the cash, alongside empty ounce bags and a large amount of takeaways.”
According to the BBC, under Auckland’s strict level 4 lockdown, all restaurants (including takeaway services) remain closed. The men (aged 23 and 30 respectively) had reportedly travelled from Hamilton to Auckland and were pulled over when police noticed their suspicious-looking vehicle travelling on a gravel road outside the city, it is suspected that they are gang members and were possibly hoping to use the KFC as a distraction.
According to a police spokesperson, officers then proceeded to arrest the pair.
“Upon seeing the police car, the vehicle did a u-turn and sped off trying to evade police,” they said. “The vehicle was searched and police located the cash, alongside empty ounce bags and a large amount of takeaways.”
The men will appear in court at a later date and further charges are expected. They now face heavy punishments under New Zealand’s tough anti-Covid laws where fines can reach up to NZ $4 000 (about R4 000) and some offenders can even face jail time of up to six months.
