The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning that two winter systems will hit South Africa this week and that their impact could potentially extend into the coming weekend. First “an intense cold front” will hit the Western Cape on Thursday morning (12 August) and will spread as far as KwaZulu-Natal by evening.
Snow is expected in a few provinces, inccluding the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and possibly KwaZulu-Natal.
Then on Friday (13 August), a second system – called a cut-off low – will develop over the western interior of the country and bring persistent wintery conditions to the southern part of South Africa and rainfall to the central interior. A cut-off low pressure system is a displace upper-air low pressure displayed northward and isolated (cut-off) from the original westerly wave regime.
Rainfall and thundershowers could develop due to the cut-off low wich will affect parts of the Northern Cape, Free State and parts of the Eastern Cape. The cut-off low could also result in light snowfall over the southern Free State and south-eastern Northern Cape.
