Warning issued over driver licenses deadline for SA

Traffic authorities have issued a warning concerning the fast-approaching grace period deadline for motoring licenses in South Africa at the end of August.

Due to the national lockdown imposed on the country last year, licensing centres were forced to close, which created a massive backlog of expired licenses.

Therefore, transport minister Fikile Mbalula announced an extension of these licenses. All learner licenses, driving license cards, temporary driving licenses and professional driving licenses that expired between 26 March 2020 and 31 December 2020 were made valid for a grace period ending 31 August 2021.

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), drivers should allow for at least four weeks lead time from the date of application until the driving license card arrives. If you don’t receive a new license until after the expiry date, you will need to apply for a temporary driving license at an additional cost.

What you will need to apply for your driving license:

  • Original ID and a copy, old driving license card or valid South African passport;
  • Four black and white ID photographs;
  • Proof of residence;
  • License renewal fee.
