South Africa will have two athletes in the 200 metre breaststroke final after Tatjana Schoenmaker and Kaylene Corbett won their respective semi-finals on Thursday.
While Tatjana Schoenmaker is the favourite for the gold medal and was expected to go through to the final, Corbett faced tough competition in her race against top athletes like 100m world record-holder Lilly King of the US and Molly Renshaw from Great Britain.
Schoenmaker (24) and Corbett (22) are training partners at Tuks in Pretoria. Schoenmaker has won the silver medal in the 100m breaststroke.
This is the first occasion since 2000 that two South Africans have made an Olympic swimming final.
The women’s 200m breaststroke final will take place on Friday, 30 July at 03:41 SA time.
