Two Swedish inmates from a high-security prison – who are serving sentences for murder- took two guards hostage for nine hours on Wednesday, eventually releasing their captives after a demand for pizza was answered.
The hostage drama unfolded at about 12:30 p.m. local time, when the two Swedish inmates managed to break into the guard room, they were carrying razor blades and locked themselves in with the guards.
The prison was locked down and special unit forces, an ambulance, police helicopter and firetruck were dispatched.
After the mediator was sent in and the inmates’ initial request for a helicopter was denied, they requested 20 pizzas for themselves and fellow inmates.
The pizzas were delivered to the inmates at 16:30 and by 21:30 the inmates released both guards.
The two inmates were later taken to the police station for questioning.
