According to local police, at least seven people have died and many more are missing following severe floods in Western Germany.

The worst of the flooding took place in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, where about 50 people have been waiting on rooftops to be rescued.

At least 30 people are missing in the Eifel region after several homes collapsed.

A large part of the floods can be linked to when the banks of the Ahr river, in Germany burst. Malu Dreyer, chief of the Rhineland-Palatinate state, described the flooding as a “catastrophe”.

“There are dead, missing and many people still in danger,” she said. “All of our emergency services are in action round the clock and risking their own lives.”

Police helicopters and the army were deployed to some areas to help stranded residents. Four people in the Eifel region died when their homes were swept away on early Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, two firefighters died on Wednesday in North Rhine-Westphalia. One drowned while the other reportedly collapsed following a rescue operation.

Experts stated that it is possible that the flooding in Germany was due to climate change but linking any single event to global warming is complicated.

The death toll is expected to rise.
