According to Haitian officials they have arrested a US-based doctor as a key suspect in the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.
The suspect, a Haitian-born doctor who is based in Florida, Christian Emmanuel Sanon, is suspected of playing a leading role in the assassination and was allegedly involved in recruiting others in the assassination.
President Moïse was shot and killed on 7 July at his home in Port-au-Prince with the assailants reportedly posing as US Drug Enforcement Agency agents before entering his home.
National Police Chief, Leon Charles, said that Doctor Sanon arrived in the country in early June by private plane with a “political objective”.
Police Chief Charles claimed that their initial plan had been to arrest President Moïse but “the mission then changed”. He did not elaborate further.
“When we, the police, blocked the progress of these bandits after they committed their crime, the first person that one of the assailants called was Christian Emmanuel Sanon,” said Mr Charles.
“He contacted two other people that we consider to be the masterminds of the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.” The police chief did not say who the other two people were.
Doctor Sanon reportedly used a Venezuelan security firm that is based in the US to recruit assailants but the motive for the killing is still not clear.
