Singer Dua Lipa is being sued after reportedly posting a paparazzi picture of herself on Instagram.
According to US court documents, the singer was photographed while queuing at an airport in February 2019 and then later she shared the photo with her fans “without permission or authorization”.
Integral Images says Dua Lipa profited from the photo since her Instagram acts as a marketing tool for her music.
They are seeking $150 000 damages and have asked for a jury trial. They also asked for an order that will prevent the singer from further acts of infringement, as well as legal costs.
The picture was posted on Instagram on 7 February 2019, about four days after it was taken but has since been removed from Instagram.
Records from the US Copyright Office show that Integral Images had applied to copyright the images and the request was granted on 20 February 2021 – after Dua Lipa posting them.
Integral Images claims that Dua Lipa had “knowingly” posted the picture to social media without permission, and stood to make money from the shot.
“The Account is monetized in that it contains content designed to accumulate followers who are directed to, via link and/or advertisement, consume and purchase Defendant’s content, Defendant profits from these activities,” is what the complaint reads.
There has been no comment from Dua Lipa or her legal team as of yet.
