SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, claimed that the company’s Starship rocket craft could use its moving door to “chomp up” debris in space.
This was in response to a Twitter user who asked Musk if SpaceX had any ideas regarding clearing up space junk.
Musk tweeted in response to the question that, “We can fly Starship around space & chomp up debris with the moving fairing door”.
According to SpaceX’s user guide, the fairing door can open when it reaches a certain orbit, deploy the spacecraft and close before Starship returns to earth. Musk did not elaborate on how the process would work.
Last year, SpaceX President, Gwynne Shotwell said that Starship could possibly store space junk in its cargo bay until it returns to Earth.
SpaceX is planning on launching its Starship craft into orbit for the first time next month.
Increasingly more litter, including dead satellites and spare rocket parts, is floating in space as more companies launch spacecrafts into orbit, this increases collision risks.
