A New Zealand farmer was convicted of mistreating his sheep after 226 of his sheep had to be euthanized.
The sheep were found to be severely malnourished and ill and had to be euthanized.
The farmer, Bevan Scott Tait, pleaded guilty even though his defense team said he had been suffering from depression without getting any support.
The farmer was sentenced to nine months home detention and 150 hours community work under the Animal Welfare Act.
He will also be barred from managing or owning any farm animals for the next four years.
His other animals showed signs of starvation and some were suffering from fly borne infections, some of the sheep had not been sheared for what appears to be at least two years.
Inspectors had issued the farmer with an order to fix the situation but when they returned, discovered that the situation had worsened. As a result of this, 226 sheep had to be euthanized and the rest of his animals were sold to other farms.
