When treating someone who is trying to slim down, many naturopaths will first examine the person’s daily food intake. “Many people cut out sugar, but may still be eating high amounts of carbohydrates,” says naturopath Annalies Corse. “Refined carbs are broken down into glucose and, if you’re eating glucose in excess, your pancreas releases large amounts of insulin, causing your body to store the glucose as fat.”

How to meditate

Morning
Spend five minutes breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth.
Gradually slow your seconds per breath, to 12 seconds per breath.
Create a mental image of a fit and healthy-looking you.

Evening
Repeat breathing.
Cast your mind over the day and remember how many times you’ve felt guilty about your weight. Repeat: ‘I love
myself as I am several times. Give yourself a gentle embrace and go to bed.

“For some people, there hasn’t been a connection between their mental image of themselves and their physical selves,” says esoteric meditation teacher Rajesh Ramani.
“By slowing down and becoming aware of what you’re eating and how your body is performing, meditation can help
to change your attitude to health.
“If you don’t feel full mentally, because you’re not aware of what decisions and habits control you, then you’ll finish everything on your plate and more, regardless of how hungry you are,” he says. “A sustained practice for 21 days sets into motion this new perception, and in two to three months you start seeing results.”
