A message in a bottle sent by a teen boy in Rhode Island, USA, in 2018 has been found by another teen boy 2,400 miles away in the Azores. The 17-year-old boy who was spearfishing with his cousin off Sao Jorge Island in Portugal’s Azores archipelago spotted the plastic bottle bobbing in the North Atlantic Ocean on 8th June.

He took it out of the water, as he usually does when he spots marine debris, he revealed. However, when Christian Santos opened the energy drink bottle, he was astonished to find a note written by a 13-year-old boy and left in the sea off the United States in 2018. The note written in an orange marker read: “It is Thanksgiving. I am 13 and visiting family in Rhode Island. I am from Vermont. If found, email [email protected].” Christian sent an email to the address, but received no reply, prompting his mother, Molly Santos, to try to find the mystery sender via Facebook.

She wrote: “Hey, guys! So, my son was diving here in the Azores and he found a bottle floating; He grabbed it and there was a note in it! “We tried emailing the person; no response, so if you know someone who lives in Vermont, ask them to share this so we can find this kid; it’s so cool how far it came!”

Christian was on holiday in the Azores with his family when he found the bottle. Coincidentally, he had once lived in Rhode Island – which has a sizeable Portuguese immigrant community – before moving to Portugal with his family. Santos said that he hopes to one day meet the boy who sent the message, who would now be around the same age as him. He told WCVB: “We’re going to be friends for life.”
