Don’t throw away your eggshells – dry them in a 120°C oven for 20-30 minutes, then grind finely in a food processor or mortar and pestle and add them to your worm farm, or compost, or dig them into the garden.

Before throwing out an ’empty’ marker pen or highlighter, soak the tip in methylated spirits until a little ink appears in the solution. Often, the tip has simply dried out while there’s still ink in the pen. Store pens tip down.

To remove dried blood from a dry-clean only mattress topper, mix 1 tablespoon cornflour, 1 teaspoon salt and 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide into a paste. Leave on stain for 1 hour, rub with a toothbrush until stain fades. Wipe off any residue with damp cloth.
To clean a ceiling fan, slide a pillowcase over one blade at a time, sandwich blade between your hands and pull the pillowcase towards you, depositing dust into the case.

To clean marble and granite benchtops, combine 60ml methylated spirits and 3-4 drops dishwashing liquid in a 500ml spray bottle, top with water, shake, spray on benches and buff with a microfibre cloth.
Place a layer of lemon slices under a piece of fish on a barbecue plate or grill to prevent it from sticking – and add a delicious flavour!
When summer heat makes it impossible to sleep comfortably, fill a hot water bottle with iced water and place it under your ankles or knees – it will help to cool your entire body.
