URGENT: Algeria slashes activist’s jail term for ‘offending Islam’: lawyer

ALGIERS, ALGERIA – An Algerian appeals court Wednesday slashed to one year a 10-year jail term handed to opposition activist Yacine Mebarki, convicted for “profaning the Koran” and “offending Islam”, his lawyer said.

The court upheld rulings against Mebarki, active in the country’s Hirak anti-government protest movement, for “offending the precepts of (Islam), incitement to discrimination and unauthorised possession of weapons”, wrote lawyer Hachem Saci on Facebook.

But it overturned the more serious charges of profaning the Koran and pushing another Muslim to leave the religion, he said.
