KIMBERLEY. – A woman is in police custody after allegedly abandoning a one-year-old child in a vehicle near a nightclub on Friday night. The baby boy has since been placed in foster care following the incident.
Capt. Tessa Jansen, Police spokesperson, said the mother, who lives in Beaconsfield, hitchhiked with the child on Friday night before being picked up by an unknown man. “They allegedly drank in the bakkie and then decided to go to the nightclub, The Baron.”
The owner of the vehicle told a woman at the nightclub that he didn’t know where the child’s mother was and that she could take the baby for herself.
The woman called the police and the child was placed in foster care, Jansen said.
“A police member, who has a place of safe custody for babies, recognized the baby and the mother was arrested last night.”
She is expected to appear in court on child abuse and negligence charges tomorrow.
