A 23-year-old serial rapist has been sentenced to three life imprisonment terms after DNA analysis was able to link him to other crimes. Mzwanele Thando Hohlo, who was unmasked by a former police officer who was able to make a connection in reported crime cases in 2017, was handed a lengthy sentence on Tuesday by the Wynberg magistrates sexual offences court in Cape Town.
Ndakhe Gwala, the police spokesman Said: “In 2018, former investigating officer Captain Hanekom from Nyanga SAPS family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit made a connection in reported cases from the Phillipi East precinct in which the accused used the same modus operandi.
“He collected exhibits on similar cases and sent it to the SAPS forensic science laboratory for DNA analysis. The results revealed that all the cases were linked to a case opened in 2017 at Langa SAPS against Mzwanele Hohlo,” said Gwala.
Upon follow up, Hohlo could not be located at the address, which was given, but the investigating officer managed to locate his mother at Willowvale in the Eastern Cape and she confirmed his date of birth but said she had no knowledge of his whereabouts.
Photographs of Hohlo along with his ID number were circulated as the police began looking for him. “It was not until his girlfriend laid charges of assault against him in 2019 that he was arrested. The girlfriend positively identified the suspect as Mzwanele Thando Hohlo when she was shown a picture,” Gwala said.
