National Lottery operator Ithuba has issued a warning about a dangerous scam doing the rounds.
Participants in both the Lotto and Powerball draws are being advised about the warning signs which include a set of “fraudulent notifications”.
According to Ithuba, scammers are sending out fake notification – via email or SMS – claiming that the person has won a sum of money however this is not how Ithuba operates.
The only way to claim your winnings is by visiting a participating retailer, or by presenting yourself to the National Lottery’s offices. Any messages to suggest otherwise, therefore, can be treated as a scam – and South Africans are being advised to ignore them.
“The only way to win the National Lottery is to buy and be in possession of a winning ticket. The National Lottery will never send you an email or SMS stating the value of your winnings, or your details to claim them. You can claim from any participating retailer, or the Ithuba offices: Beware of such messages, they could be a scam.” Ithuba statement.
