A fire which broke out at Ukraine’s largest nuclear power plant is still burning following an assault which was launched by the Russian troops on Friday morning.
The intense fighting between the Ukrainian forces and the Russian troops triggered the fire, though a plant spokesman says the radiation level in the background are normal and the fighting has temporarily stopped.
Firefighters have been called in to fight the blaze which began in a training facility which is near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Ukraine authorities said the power plant has not been damaged and firefighters are doing their best to contain the blaze.
In a Facebook post early on Friday, Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of the Ukraine, called on the international community to help the people of Ukraine after the fire which broke out near the power plant. Zelensky accused Russia of strategically and intentionally firing at the nuclear power plant, which resulted in a fire breaking out.

“No country besides Russia has ever fired upon an atomic power plant’s reactor. The first time, the first time in history,” he said, urging European leaders to “wake up now” and stop Russian forces “before this becomes a nuclear disaster.”
Andriy Tuz, a spokesperson for the nuclear plant, said the bombardment near the nuclear plant has struck one side of the reactor. The violence in Ukraine continues even when negotiations are taking place.
