Eight cars were first set alight at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) umdumiso campus. The incident happened on Monday at 2am when unknown suspects attacked a security guard house which is on Edendale road.
The suspects set the guards house on fire with the security guard still inside. The guard managed to escape and run to call for backup. The suspects followed the guard and went to the parking bays. On arrival they threw petrol bombs which ended up burning nine cars.
When the cars caught fire, the suspects ran away, and we not apprehended. A member of the DUT Student Representative Council (SRC) acknowledged that the incident took place but disputes that DUT students did this.
The number of cars that have been burned has now risen to twelve. There have been two attacks which have made the number of burned cars rise to twelve. According to the DUT Spokesperson Smangele Zuma said two places were attacked.
The first happened when a security guard who was stationed at the entrance was attacked by what is known to be ten suspects. The security fled to call for help where the suspects followed him and burned cars belonging to staff members. The suspects got into a white car with a Durban registration. This meant that the suspects were not students from DUT.
This incident comes days after four cars had been torched at the university’s Steve Biko campus in Durban. The university has temporarily closed its doors following the violent torching of staff cars.
