The death doll of the in the fatal Mpumalanga crash has risen to nine. The number has risen to nine following the discovery of another body which was found few meters away from the crash site.
The incident happened on Wednesday on the D267 road between Dundonald and Mayflower, a minibus carrying school children was involved in an accident which has not claimed nine lives. The fatal crash had claimed seven lives with the eighth learner being rushed to hospital. Her life was cut short along the way.
The Mpumalanga provincial department in a statement said: “Ten learners have been admitted to hospital and are currently being treated with moderate and serious wounds. The learners who were involved in the fatal crash are aged between 5 and 13 years of age.”
The driver of the minibus has been charged with nine counts of culpable homicide and will be appearing at the Elukwathini Magistrates Court on Friday. Vusi Shongwe, the Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC visited the crash site.
Psychosocial assistance will be provided for the learners and teachers who are affected by this incident. A task team will be formed to see how it can support the families of the deceased learners prepare for their funerals.
