Months have gone by, and Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) still has no funds to fix it. A fire broke out in April last year forcing most of the key departments to shut down. A hospital which is meant to save lives stands with no funds to help fix it.
The devastating fire which took time to die down, did not just affect the patients, but also affected the workers at the hospital. Lives which would have been saved are lost because there are no funds to repair the hospital.
The head of internal medicine, professor Adam Mohamed, explains how frustrating the situation has been. The intensive care unit has been severely affected with over 200 beds lost to the blaze. The beds which would be helping the most vulnerable patients are gone.
Ever since the blaze happened nothing has been done and patients have been moved to other hospitals. Professor Mohamed explains how patients who would have been rotated in hospital are now forced to be in wards where they can easily catch infections. The mortality rate has gone way up, and patients are not getting the surgeries that they need.
The money which was meant to help rebuild the hospital is not available, all thanks to corruption. It has been 10 months since the hospital burned down and there are still no words or plans to get it up and running.
